Dr. Harpal “Paul” Khanuja is an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement surgery. He is known for combining technical expertise with a patient-centered approach that emphasizes careful listening, individualized treatment, and thoughtful decision-making.

With more than two decades of experience in academic and clinical orthopaedic surgery, Dr. Khanuja has dedicated his career to helping patients restore mobility and quality of life. His work has also extended beyond the operating room through research, education, leadership, and humanitarian service. He is one of a few surgeons nationally to be inducted into The Hip and Knee Societies.

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Khanuja believes excellent orthopaedic care begins with understanding the patient. Every treatment plan should reflect not only the diagnosis, but also the patient’s symptoms, lifestyle, priorities, and expectations. His goal is to provide care that is technically excellent, clearly explained, and aligned with each patient’s goals.

Background

Dr. Khanuja grew up in Troy, New York. After attending the University of Pennsylvania, he returned to Albany, NY for his medical school and orthopaedic residency training. He completed his fellowship in joint reconstruction at Johns Hopkins University, where he worked for over twenty years. He was a full professor and served as the Chief of Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery for Johns Hopkins , and he also served as Chair of Orthopaedics at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center.

Dr. Khanuja maintained a busy clinical practice in the Baltimore area while teaching residents, fellows, and surgeons nationally and abroad. He moved to be Chair of Orthopaedics at Atlantic Health Morristown Medical Center to build on the amazing quality of orthopaedics at this nationally ranked program.

Dr. Khanuja’s academic interests include adult reconstruction, patient optimization, implant design, perioperative quality, and outcomes research. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and has contributed nationally to the advancement of hip and knee replacement care.

He is also committed to mentoring the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons and to building systems of care that.
